Coronavirus (Covid-19)

A Message from Phil & the Deacons – 20th March 2020

Dear All,

As a result of recent advice to ‘avoid unnecessary social contact’ by the government and the Baptist Union, the following changes will take place with immediate effect.

Closure of all gatherings in order to safeguard those vulnerable to the virus and those needing to stay well in order to care for family who are self isolating.

These include:

  • Sunday Services
  • Play Centre
  • Well-being Cafe
  • Tiddly Tunes
  • Big House
  • Oasis
  • Lunch Club
  • Community Cinema

Although we cannot physically gather, we still want to support and encourage each other, so we’re proposing the following to keep us in touch with each other, with Jesus and with the needs of the family at GBC.

We’re hoping to upload onto the website a short pre-recorded video each week for you to use on Sundays. This will probably include a short message, prayers, and any news that is relevant for that week. We’re pretty new at this – but we’re hoping to develop the content as we learn and grow in confidence.

‘Scattered Salt’ to be e-mailed (or posted) to all members and attenders each Monday. Unlike our Bulletin, this will contain news and resources to help us negotiate this time as a scattered church. We’d like to encourage you to contribute news and articles that will help others (to Phil or Ali Dean). It will also contain devotional material for those who cannot access the video.

Your leaders have received an email today. We still want groups to meet, but in a different way. We’re asking all groups to arrange for members of the group to contact each other every week (preferably by phone call) to check on each other’s well-being and offer help/prayer. Please contact Adrienne and Phil if one of your group develops symptoms. We’ve also outlined a number of online tools to help you video call or stay in touch during the pandemic. See your host/leader.

For those not in life groups, we’re drawing up a list and will ensure that these people are also contacted each week.

We’re asking all of you who are not in the ‘at risk’ category (and are not caring for people who are vulnerable) to team up with someone else and identify one person in our fellowship who will potentially need to self-isolate or take extra care.

Please advise Adrienne or Phil of anyone having to self isolate or who is symptomatic.

Let’s keep being the church- even though we are not gathering together. As a scattered church we can still support each other relationally, spiritually and practically. I believe God can use this difficult time to reconnect us with what is most important about being the church.

“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” Rom 8:28

With faith, hope and love,
Phil & the Deacons.
