And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God. (1 Peter 2:5)
How would you describe yourself?
Some people would start with physical appearance for a question like this – you might say how tall or short you are, you might say what colour and length your hair is. It might then progress on to describing more of your character and nature. I hope somewhere along the line you would say you are a follower of Jesus.
I can honestly say that I have never described myself as a living stone!! BUT that is exactly what we are. That’s to say if you have given your life to Jesus, if you have chosen to follow him and place your trust in him.
We are ‘LIVING STONES’ – a metaphor to illustrate our deep and secure, intimate relationship with Jesus.
Jesus is described as the Living Stone (1 Peter 2:5) who has been rejected by people and we also are living stones – it’s how we are connected to God. We have placed our lives on the foundation of Jesus Christ, we build our lives on the Living Stone. Jesus is also described as the cornerstone, it’s wonderful that as living stones we begin to be part of the building – God’s Kingdom.
It’s also a metaphor for the church, that as the Master Builder, God is placing us his living stones exactly where he wants us to be and as such we are also connected to each other, supporting each other and strengthening each other. All of this is for God’s Glory, for he alone is worthy of our praise, we are to be holy and pleasing to Him.
‘Living Stones’ let us keep being built up together as we sit on the foundation of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus, the Living Stone, as your living stones, may you continue to build us into a
spiritual temple, that is holy and pleasing to you. In your Name Amen.
