There’s something very British about egg mayonnaise sandwiches, Jaffa cakes and Ribena, and all three were on offer at the street party on the green hosted By Godstone Baptist Church on the village green last Friday.
Two hours before, we had already hosted a special lunch club in the Baptist Church hall for seniors. A great atmosphere was created by our regulars, many of whom dressed up. Union Jack tablecloths and a ‘red, white & blue’ dessert added to the celebrations.
But we really wanted to include the younger generations in this national celebration of identity and community; hence the street party on the village green.
At an assembly before the event, we were able to tell the children about the Queen’s life of service and hand out 200 copies of the Bible Society’s commemorative booklet ‘The Servant Queen and the King She Serves.’ It was a wonderful opportunity to bless the village with a gift of community, fun and food for both young and old and to celebrate the values that make communities great places to live in. Values that the Queen has been living by for the better part of 90 years.
