I always find it a bit frustrating when people suggest things in church and then back it up with’ God’s told me…!” It leaves me nowhere to go except to respond- “Well he hasn’t told me yet, but when he does I’ll get back to you.”
It reminds me of the story that is told of a Catholic bishop who was really upset with a woman in his congregation who claimed to have daily conversations with Jesus. The Bishop thought it was all getting a little out of hand, so he went to visit the woman.
He told her that while she might be convinced she was speaking with Jesus, it was probably all in her imagination. To prove his point he said, “If you can talk to Jesus, ask him right now to name the three sins I confessed in the confessional box this morning!”
The woman sat for a while and then, smiling, she turned to the bishop and said, “I asked Him, but Jesus says “I forgot.””
As you walk with Jesus this week, I pray he will speak very clearly to you. I pray he will remind you that the events of this week achieved your forgiveness so completely that God no longer remembers our sin.
But this is the new covenant I will make
with the people of Israel on that day, says the Lord:
I will put my laws in their minds, and I will write them on their hearts.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.
And they will not need to teach their neighbours, nor will they need to teach their relatives,
saying, ‘You should know the Lord.’ For everyone, from the least to the greatest,
will know me already.
And I will forgive their wickedness,
and I will never again remember their sins.”
