When we receive a formal or official invitation, it usually comes in writing. If we are being accepted into a position we have applied for or have been given, we want it in writing and usually signed by the person with the authority to engage us.
Some positions or memberships require a fee to be paid, and sometimes we are invited to attend an event, e.g. a show, which someone has paid for us to attend.
We know that God accepts us in Christ when we believe in the Gospel and come to him in repentance and faith. He welcomes us with open arms because of his great love for us. Why? Because Jesus paid the price to remove the barrier – sin – which kept us from him. And it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that we were redeemed from an empty way of life, but with the precious blood of a sinless Christ, our Saviour (see 1 Peter 1:18-19).
However, just as we need a contract to be in writing, so we need a constant reminder of our position in Christ. We get this through his Word, the Bible. Given that we live by faith and not by sight (2 Cor. 5:7), we need something that feeds our faith. While the works of God in creation and in people’s lives can support this, it is God’s design that “faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ” (Romans 10:17).
Just as we need physical food to sustain us such that we can remain healthy and active, so we need a daily diet of God’s Word to sustain us spiritually and remind us of our acceptance in the Lord Jesus Christ. We all experience doubt, fear, uncertainty and sorrow. We may even doubt our acceptance and security in Christ. But we have the ‘document’, the contract. God never changes and his Word is forever true. Remember what Jesus said: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” (Matt. 24:35).
Countless people through the ages have proved that God’s Word is the rock and foundation of their lives, just as Jesus said it would (Matt. 7:24). How else, then, can we survive, as believers, in this changing world – which often challenges the things of God – without constant reference to the covenant or contract we have with our Creator, signed in Jesus’ blood, that is the Word of God.
The words of Stuart Townend’s song comes to mind:
From the breaking of the dawn to the setting of the sun,
I will stand on every promise of Your word.
Words of power, strong to save, that will never pass away,
I will stand on every promise of Your word.
For Your covenant is sure, and on this I am secure,
I can stand on every promise of Your word.
Remember, “God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription:
“The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.” (2 Tim. 2:19)
So, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.” (Colossians 3:16)
